MY SOCIAL SECURITY SIMPLIFIES YOUR LIFE

So many people buzz through extremely busy and complicated schedules these days. A smartphone in one hand, a computer in front of you, and a digital task list that never seems to end. In addition, to complicate things just a little more, there’s another event you need to add to your list—National Simplify Your Life week. This event takes place August 1 through 7. Put it on your calendar so you don’t forget!

Most organized people agree that planning ahead is a great way to simplify your life. Whether you’re planning tomorrow’s schedule, next summer’s vacation, or your retirement.

We have a suggestion that can help you simplify your life when it comes to Social Security. If you haven’t already (it’s probably on your task list), open your own personal my Social Security account.

What’s my Social Security? It’s a free, secure, online account that allows you immediate access to your personal Social Security information. During your working years, you can use my Social Security to view your Social Security Statement to check your earnings record and see estimates of the future retirement, disability and survivor benefits you and your family may receive based on your earnings. If you already receive Social Security benefits, you can use my Social Security to check your benefit information, change your address and phone number, change your electronic payment methods, and even obtain a benefit verification letter. Check it out and sign up for my Social Security at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount.

After you check your online Social Security Statement, be sure to visit our Retirement Estimator. Like my Social Security, you can use it as many times as you’d like. The Retirement Estimator lets you compute potential future Social Security benefits by changing variables, such as retirement dates and future earnings. You may discover that you’d rather wait another year or two before you retire to earn a higher benefit. To get instant, personalized estimates of your future benefits just go to www.socialsecurity.gov/estimator.

There are many tools at www.socialsecurity.gov that are simple and convenient to use. Open a my Social Security account today by visiting www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount and simplify your life.

Your local Danville Social Security Office is participating in a mYSocialsecurity sign up challenge and we need your help!

With the Social Security Administration discontinuing the distribution of award/benefit letters in the immediate  future, and the discontinuance of annual earnings report you need an EASY, CONVENIENT AND SECURE METHOD OF SECURING YOUR INFORMATION!

From August 18 – 22, 2014 we need you to ask your co-workers, friends and family to to sign up for a mYSocialsecurity account

Grant Writing 101
Everything you want to know from a funder, but are afraid to ask!
August 27, 2014
9am - 4pm

Grant Writing 101 will walk participants through the major components of a grant application. Both beginners and experienced grant writers will benefit from the class. It will help answer such questions as: How do I convince the funder that my needs are greater than everyone else's?  How can I tell the difference between goals, measureable objectives, activities and outcomes? How do I know what to include in next year's workplan when I haven't even planned this year yet? Do I really need to evaluate my program?

Make plans to join us, Wednesday, August 27, at United Way of Danville-Pittsylvania County from 9am - 4pm. Lunch break from Noon -1:15pm. Cost $40 per person.

Writing Great Objectives for a Grant
The difference between great objectives and good objectives can make the all difference!
August 28, 2014
9am - Noon

Writing Great Objectives, a half day workshop,
is for those who have written grants or have participated in a grant writing class. Good objectives can mean the difference between being funded and being rejected. Participants will practice writing strong, measureable objectives and work to build an evaluation plan based on objectives. Participants should come to the workshop with an idea for a future grant proposal.

Make plans to join us, Thursday, August 28, at United Way of Danville-Pittsylvania County from 9am - Noon.  Cost $25 per person.

Jennifer Smith, Grant Writer

Smith has over 20 years of grant writing experience and has worked in the nonprofit field for over 30 years. She has raised more than $8 million through grants at the local, state, and federal levels. Smith's extensive experience in writing and reviewing grants has continued to make her workshops popular with both beginning and experienced grant writers.

Big Brothers Big Sisters has awarded Daisy Simmons as the Big of The Year! The award was presented at the Danville-Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours event at the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Danville Area office recently. She and her little, Destiny Roberts have been matched for four years. Destiny’s grades and attitude have improved and Simmons has enjoyed watching her grow and evolve into a fine young lady. She says, "I am fortunate to have the opportunity to watch her grow these last four years. I have been very, very pleased with the experience and I think she has too.” Congrats Mrs. Daisy!

DACCS SURVEY QUESTIONS

As we all know, most agencies and facilities are suffering from a staff shortage and therefore are reluctant to allow their employees extra time to attend outside community activities.

DACCS continues to be a platform for Non-profit, Federal, City and State employees to meet and network. In order to make it more convenient for all members to attend the meetings on a consistent basis we are considering changing the frequency of the DACCS meeting. The DACCS newsletter will continue to be published on a monthly basis.

Please visit www.daccs.org, click “contact us” or write j.adama.vacanti@ssa.gov and submit your choice of the following meeting times for the Danville Area Council of Community Services In 2014.

  • Every three months

  • Every other month

  • Monthly
